at the very beginning of my quest to hike yosemite for the first time i lost my sole, the sole of my shoes that is. i packed my hiking boots that have seen me through places near and far -- Annapurna, Canadian Rockies, Taos, Bar Harbor, Kauai, Yucatan Peninsula, Red Rocks...just to name a few. my mistake was that i thought the boots would outlast the memories. i found this not to be the case at the very spot where teddy roosevelt and john muir once stood. i had packed my boots with fervor and excitement just a few days before and they seemed to look pretty good despite their age. I walked miles in these shoes and wore them like a badge of courage. so with half dome in my sight, walking confidently in my shoes, they began to fall apart. as the rubber soul peeled away and the bottoms turned to ash i heard the voice of a concerned stranger "i guess it's time for some new shoes". well needless to say this was not my shining moment on the mountain (that came later). embarrassment aside, it was the perfect ice breaker to what turned out to be a lovely few days. i brought more than stories (and a new pair of boots) back with me from the wilderness. i was reminded again of how fragile life is, it's tenuous beauty, imparting wisdom, demanding presence, ruthless edges and lovely curves -- and how blessed i am to be in it's grip.
enjoy the rest of your day lovelies. i'm going to finish the latest CocoRosie wedding bids for 2011 and nothing like a very special diamond to keep me inspired. - xo
