i'm consumed this week with more mundane yet necessary tasks like paying bills, filling scripts, laundry and forever holding for a representative to pick up the line. i did manage to successfully tackle my amazon 'hit list' and for that i was awarded 11.99 in super free shipping costs. i was up til 4am laboring over the redesign of the CocoRosie site and i am still not sure how i'm feeling about the new direction. web design can suck it. wordpress on the other hand is a dream. today i will be making an arrangement of white ranunculus and other lovely materials which will fall in the hands of a certain local watering hole.

some interesting reads today here and here. also if you are looking for some handmade jewels, check out my girl jessie's new site. for the holidays, a birthday perhaps? note to the BF: in lieu of diamonds, this would do just fine...i'm just sayin.

tuesday mixing it up. have a lovely day. - xo

VOICES CARRY

In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life may you proceed with balance and stealth. For nothing is more precious than the life force and may the love of that force guide you as you go. ~ Patti Smith (Early Work 1970-1979)

©robert mapplethorpe

Patti Smith just won the National Book Award for her memoir 'Just Kids'. I was elated to hear the news. She was one of my childhood heroes and i admire her work tremendously. A steady passionate voice during all those tumultuous, tender, yearning moments of my youth and beyond.

(here you can listen to an excerpt and the last letter she wrote to Robert Mapplethorpe before his death in 1989. more here and an older post here)

oh and read the book if you haven't already, it's a gem.

YOSEMITE (finally)

YOSEMITE
(finally)

at the very beginning of my quest to hike yosemite for the first time i lost my sole, the sole of my shoes that is. i packed my hiking boots that have seen me through places near and far -- Annapurna, Canadian Rockies, Taos, Bar Harbor, Kauai, Yucatan Peninsula, Red Rocks...just to name a few. my mistake was that i thought the boots would outlast the memories. i found this not to be the case at the very spot where teddy roosevelt and john muir once stood. i had packed my boots with fervor and excitement just a few days before and they seemed to look pretty good despite their age. I walked miles in these shoes and wore them like a badge of courage. so with half dome in my sight, walking confidently in my shoes, they began to fall apart. as the rubber soul peeled away and the bottoms turned to ash i heard the voice of a concerned stranger "i guess it's time for some new shoes". well needless to say this was not my shining moment on the mountain (that came later). embarrassment aside, it was the perfect ice breaker to what turned out to be a lovely few days. i brought more than stories (and a new pair of boots) back with me from the wilderness. i was reminded again of how fragile life is, it's tenuous beauty, imparting wisdom, demanding presence, ruthless edges and lovely curves -- and how blessed i am to be in it's grip.

enjoy the rest of your day lovelies. i'm going to finish the latest CocoRosie wedding bids for 2011 and nothing like a very special diamond to keep me inspired.  - xo

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

another monday is upon us. i'm still thinking about the weekend and the long walks through the cobbled streets of our neighborhood. the subtle shift of the morning light and the warm, rich hues of the falling leaves. time moves fast in slow motion.

THE POWER OF THREE

A&E and The Power of Three

three is a mystical number that shows up repeatedly in mythology:
three fates, three muses, three graces. three is a symmetrical
number that satisfies something deep within our psyches.
it's what binds us - - mind, body, soul.

so when in doubt, think three.

this week my curiosity took me here and here and here.

inothernews: i hope you exercised your right to VOTE today! oh and my attempt at starting the cleanse this week failed miserably on day #2 today. i couldn't help myself -- the meatball leftovers from sunday's supper (so much better the 2nd time around especially on rye toast with mayo) pretty naughty! and the coffee habit, well not so easy to break. tomorrow's another day, wish me luck:)

LEAKY PIPES AND SWEET DREAMS

LEAKY PIPES AND SWEET DREAMS

this weekend when i was awake i discovered a leak under my kitchen sink and while i was sleeping all my teeth fell out. one by one, in a dream. strange happenings. as an explanation i'm going with a bout of fatigue coupled with floating anxiety. as far as the leak is concerned well i live in an old building so not much of a mystery there.

happy belated halloween! hope it was less of the trick and more of the treat for you. xo
